Welcome to

CONNECTIVE BOWEN THERAPY

BOWEN therapy is a gentle and non-invasive therapy to reduce aches and pains.

The body is networked by a continuous system of connective tissue which surrounds all our organs and muscles. Bowen works with this connective tissue as well as the muscles, ligaments, tendons and soft tissue, to stimulate your nervous system.

Each move sends signals to the brain which then assesses the problem and surrounding area, before making any needed changes. It is this response, and often immediate release, that results in a reduction of pain.

At Connective BOWEN Therapy, your health is our number one priority.

WHAT IS BOWEN?

BOWEN is a soft tissue therapy, that uses gentle rolling type movements to stimulate the brain to correct problems.

A series of small moves made with thumbs and fingers, trigger a response in your tissue and nervous system to help release areas of tension or imbalance. Specific moves are made over areas of muscle, tendon, ligament and other connective tissues using the amount of pressure appropriate to the individual. It does not involve hard adjustments or pushing tissue around like a massage and is therefore gentle and relaxing to receive.

BOWEN can make a major difference for people with muscular and skeletal problems such as aches and pains, however, it can also help with other problems such as asthma, headaches, stress, IBS, and hay-fever. It is common for longstanding problems to be helped in just a few sessions.

A key aspect of a BOWEN treatment is that the body is treated as a whole, instead of only focusing on a specific area of pain or problem. This means that any changes are likely to be more effective and long-lasting.

BOWEN does not ‘force’ the body to change in the same way that a manipulation would, neither does it involve moving tissue around like a recognise areas of problems by sending signals to the surrounding tissue and the brain.massage.  Instead the BOWEN move ‘asks’ the body and brain to massage BOWEN does not ‘force’ the body to change in the same way that a manipulation would, neither does it involve moving tissue around like a

BOWEN works with the local tissue to help release the tension physically (under the move), this is like dropping a pebble in a pond where the ripples go out, allowing tension to be released through the rest of the body. The brain also receives signals from the BOWEN move which gets the brain to asses the area and make changes as needed, for example getting the muscle to release or tighten. The BOWEN move can also effect the nervous system often resulting in a calming of the nervous system which in turn can help reduce pain levels.

Many people prefer the more gentle, relaxing and non-invasive treatment that BOWEN therapy offers. Some clients experience immediate relief and instant changes. In most circumstances, clients feel the benefits from their treatment in the days that follow, as their body makes the needed adjustments when it is ready.  These changes can even occur weeks after the treatment.

BOWEN is suitable for all ages and is also great during pregnancy and for babies and children.

BOWEN HAS HELPED...

WHAT IS A BOWEN TREATMENT LIKE?

Each treatment is tailored to what you need as an individual so the amount of ‘work’ done in each session may vary. There are no manipulations involving ‘clicking’ or ‘crunching’. The BOWEN move itself is a type of rolling movement that helps to calm the nervous systems which, in turn, promotes release, repair and rest throughout the body.

Appointments start with a consultation and assessment, after which treatment starts. This is usually carried out on the therapy couch but can be performed seated if you are not able to lay on your front or side. In most cases, an immediate relief is felt, however, it is possible that you may walk out of the treatment room feeling only a little improvement.

The responses in your body often occur in the days following a treatment. Some people experience tiredness, general aches and often thirst following a treatment. These responses indicate change is happening and usually fade within a few days.

HOW MANY TREATMENT DO I NEED?

If you have never had BOWEN before,  recommended a course of 3 treatments, one week apart. This will allow your body time to process any changes and encourage the changes to hold.  After your first treatment, we can carry out a review and decide if this form of therapy is working for you and what the best course of treatment will be.

Long lasting chronic problems may benefit from regular treatments to aid in increased energy levels, pain management and improved well-being.

Many people have followed up treatments every 6-8 weeks or every 3 months for maintenance, to help with stress management, energy levels or when they feel the need for a ‘top up’.

WHAT TO WEAR?

BOWEN can be performed directly on the skin or through light clothing so there is no need to undress. T-shirts, joggers, leggings or light trousers are ideal to wear for your appointment.

BOWEN moves are difficult to apply through thick material such as jumpers, thick skirts and trousers or jeans.

WHO WAS TOM BOWEN?

THOMAS AMBROSE BOWEN (Tom Bowen) - 1916-1982, an Australian, created, refined and practiced what we know today, as Bowen Therapy.

Tom Bowen lived in the city of Geelong, sixty miles south of Melbourne, in Australia's south-east.

Tom had an eighth-grade education and no formal medical training.   In the early 1950's Tom's day job was at the Geelong Cement Works as a general laborer but at night and during weekends he treated sports and workers injuries.   It was not unusual for people to be lined up, on his front lawn, in the middle of the night, waiting for treatment.

Finally, in the late 1950's, Tom Bowen moved into a permanent, full-time practice.   Apart from creating the technique, Tom's greatest ability was an uncanny knack of assessing just what "moves" a client needed and to apply them quickly and accurately.   For much of his practicing years, Tom saw fourteen patients an hour, needing to spend only a very short time with each, to determine and apply the appropriate "moves".

Tom Bowen practiced and refined his technique over some thirty years, working right up to his death, in 1982, from diabetes.   He didn't advertise, all of his thousands of clients, many coming from throughout Australia, came through word of mouth referral.

Tom Bowen, did not document his methods.   Over the years many came and observed his practice, few were able to sustain the effort.   In all, six students 'studied' under Tom, each over a lengthy period of time.   And it is from these six students that Bowen Therapy and its many derivations have come to us today.

Tom Bowen was a genuinely humble man, given to few words, but with an endless energy and passion for helping and relieving others of their ills, most especially those from less fortunate circumstances.   He treated his unique abilities as a 'gift from God' and gave of himself tirelessly to help others.

That Tom Bowen, was able, in the environment of those times - Geelong in the 50's and 60's, to create and develop a practice that treated tens of thousands of people, each with a few simple yet special "moves", speaks volumes for his personal dedication and tenacity and the success of his technique.   For without the stunning results he achieved, to support him, he would not have been able to sustain his work for over thirty years.

His example is a shining light to all those who follow in his footsteps.   All those of us who have benefited from Bowen Therapy, owe Tom Bowen a debt of gratitude for without his perseverance, tenacity, dedication, generosity and goodwill, none of this would be possible.
